At UFC 278, Paulo Costa earned yet another victory inside the Octagon by prevailing against Luke Rockhold in a fight that was not only difficult but also bloody. He triumphed in the fight with a victory decided by unanimous decision and was awarded the Fight of the Night bonus for his efforts.
Costa has stated that he was under the impression that his encounter with Rockhold would be the last one on his UFC deal. It would appear that this is not the case, as he still has one fight left under the contract he currently has.
“I’m on a high, high level, fighting the best of this division and my contract is too old,” he continued. “When I fought Marvin Vettori, I got $35,000. $35,000. For this one was a couple more, a couple more, I got the win bonus, and because when I fought Marvin Vettori, I got a 20% reduction.”
With this cut, Costa’s take for his fight against Vettori is estimated to be around $45,000. Not being able to make the middleweight limit of 186 pounds cost him twenty percent of his winnings. He was scheduled to fight Vettori at a catchweight, but after Costa notified the UFC that he would not be able to make the cut, the bout was changed to a light heavyweight bout. Costa was defeated by a score of ten to zero in the unanimous decision.
On October 23 of last year, UFC Vegas 41 featured a main event between Costa and Vettori. There were no other notable competitors at the ESPN+-streamed event besides Costa and Vettori.
“I need to talk with them and see,” said Costa.
“I’m not rushing up to see, but we need to see, we need to figure it out. I’m not happy with the current contract, of course.”
