Pat Downey made his debut in mixed martial arts on Saturday after years of preparation, but the bout was over in just 36 seconds.
Downey won his first mixed martial arts and basic mixed martial arts match in just 36 seconds at Bellator 284. His opponent was Keyes Nelson, who had a record of 0-4 in MMA and 0-1 in BMMA. Saturday was the day that the event was held in the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
At the very beginning of the match, former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler Downey attempted to take his opponent down for a takedown. After executing two double underhooks, he was able to secure a hold and send Nelson crashing to the canvas. After a little period of time spent in side control, Downey immediately launched himself into the mount position with full force. While Nelson was on his back, Downey positioned himself in an arm-triangle choke position and applied pressure. A few while later, the tap was turned on.
During the interview that followed the bout, Downey made the statement that he intends to fight everyone in the middleweight category for Bellator. After that, he rejoiced with his one and only cornerman, the retired mixed martial artist Luis Pena.
Downey, who is now 30 years old, has openly considered making the switch to MMA since 2020. Downey was a divisive figure off the mats despite the fact that he was an enormous skill on them.
According to Downey, he was “cancelled” by the wrestling community as a direct result of a conflict that erupted as a result of legal concerns and controversies that occurred on social media. In a February interview with MMA Junkie, Downey stated that he did not have any regrets about his time spent wrestling but that he did aspire to realize his full potential in MMA.
