While losing a decision to Andy Ruiz Jr., Luis Ortiz took use of his time in the spotlight to show his support for incarcerated former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez by wearing a shirt that read “Free Cain Velasquez.”
Ten charges, including attempted murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle or aircraft, three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, wilfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony, have resulted in Velasquez’s detention without bond.
The man who is suspected of assaulting Velasquez’s child, Harry Eugene Goularte, was supposedly pursued by the former UFC champion. During the pursuit, Velasquez allegedly fired multiple shots from a 40-caliber handgun at the fleeing car. The stepfather of Goularte was hurt in the supposed incident.
UFC president Dana White received an outpouring of support from the fight community, including from fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Anthony Pettis, and Marlon “Chito” Vera. Fans and competitors have shown their support for Velasquez by using the hashtag #FreeCain; now, Luis Ortiz joins the ranks of many in the combat sports community who are standing with Velasquez and showing their empathy for his plight.
