The legendary Daniel Cormier of the UFC will be appearing at an upcoming WWE event.
There has been a lot of tension between Seth Rollins and Matt Riddle, and it’s possible that their Fight Pit bout at Extreme Rules will turn violent. It’s possible that a regular referee wouldn’t be able to keep things under control, but might a former UFC Champion be able to?
On Saturday, October 8th, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, the contest will feature just that. The news that former UFC Light Heavyweight and UFC Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will act as guest referee for the Fight Pit bout between Rollins and Riddle was first reported by Ariel Helwani on Saturday night.
Although 43-year-old Cormier has never tried his hand at professional wrestling, his credentials as an amateur wrestler are on par with the finest in the world. Cormier has medaled at the World Wrestling Championships and finished as a runner-up in NCAA Division I while attending Oklahoma State University. He has also made the United States World or Olympic team six times.
Fight Pit matches take place in a steel cage (with a catwalk around the top) without the normal ropes or turnbuckles, giving them the feel of a shoot fight. Riddle, who had a great career in mixed martial arts before turning to pro wrestling, would seem to thrive in such an atmosphere.
Despite this, many people have pointed out on social media that Cormier and Rollins are friends and have shown their support for each other in the past at major events. Although WWE hasn’t got much time to play around with the idea of fans suspecting that D.C. could not be calling things fairly, because the revelation came a week before Extreme Rules, it’s possible that they will.
