At Bellator 278 in April, Velasquez lost the women’s flyweight title to Liz Carmouche (16-7 MMA, 4-0 BMMA). With a strong finish in the fourth round, Carmouche knocked out Velasquez.
Velasquez objected to the delay and argued for a reversal of the verdict. That didn’t work out, but she will get another shot at reclaiming the title.
At Bellator 288, which takes place on December 9 at Mohegan Sun Arena, Carmouche will defend his title against Velasquez.
After a successful career in the UFC, where she challenged Ronda Rousey for the inaugural women’s bantamweight belt in 2013, Carmouche signed with Bellator in 2020. She had to win her first three Bellator fights before getting a crack at Velasquez, and she did so with a 3-0 finish rate in her first four matches for the company.
In December of 2020, Velasquez won in Uncasville after defeating Ilima-Lei Macfarlane. In July 2021, she defended it with a split call against Denise Kielholtz, but she eventually lost it to Carmouche. Two years practically to the day after she initially won the title, she will return to the same arena to defend it.
